What could be more random than rain? It falls where and when ever-changing climatic conditions converge. It’s individual raindrops fall from a great height and are bantied about by wind until they finally impact the surface with a soft and short-lived but sonorous splash.
Yet, all of nature has some mysterious order underlying it. It may be so complex that we simply cannot perceive its order, but the more we come to understand the interwoven ways of our ecosystem, the more clearly we begin to grasp its meticulous genius.

Lluviología
From Elogio del Agua
Movement II
A study of rain
In spite of the seemingly aleatory nature of rain, this short musical piece for orchestra fractionally draws back the curtain between random and reason. Clearly, the true nature behind the mystery of ecological order is far beyond the scope of this short composition. This musical approach does, however, lead us to reframe how we think;and there, perhaps, lies its value.
By setting the piece in 7/8 meter, we take away the regular pulse associated with more common duple and triple beat patterns while at the same time creating space for a less predictable yet ordered pattern.
The scale is aeolian and the method of composition is a 7 tone row ordered to create a sense of being aleatory while being highly organized according to a mathematical formula.
